Location: Big Bend National Park, Texas About this photo:

Our first hike in Big Bend was on the Pine Canyon trail. My wife and I started out in the late afternoon from our campsite near the trailhead.

We hiked into the canyon slowly, stopping often to rest and take photos. Towards the end of the trail, we found ourselves on the floor of the canyon. This is a beautiful area and is full of trees. Due to the heavy rains in the previous month, everything was green and blooming.

I happened upon this vine of brilliant red flowers. They were being hit by the late afternoon sun, and were glowing beautifully. I set up the tripod and changed to a 50mm lens. I got as close as I could and composed the shot. Notice the out-of-focus specular highlights: they are pentagons due to the 5-blade diaphram of the lens.
