Controls

All the necessary electric and pneumatic switches for the model are housed in one hand-held control box. This box is connected to the model with a thick umbilical crammed full of air hoses and wires.

I decided to not use the R/C control unit for the motors because I'd have a connected pneumatic control box anyway. I had plans to use my HiTechnic 4-channel R/C receiver for something else ;-)

The electric switches on the box are non-Lego toggle switches. I mounted them in bored-out Technic plates, and then crammed axle joiners over the toggle part. Although not as convenient as real Lego switches (i.e. the polarity reversers), they are a hell of a lot cheaper and much easier to find.

The electric and pneumatic diagrams (found on the planning page) explain the functions of the switches.

The umbilical is stiff and heavy, and you must support it a little when operating the model. I now have extra hose and plan to lengthen the umbilical. Right now, it is about 3 feet in length.

Body Panels
Panels

The aesthetic paneling on the body is removable. The panels connect using black friction pegs, and when removed, provide access to the model's interior. They are very simple in construction, involving mostly traditional plates and bricks (in yellow, of course!).

Logos

I made several logos to use on the model. I "eyeballed" many photos of the real machines and then sketched out the letters and numbers using AutoCAD. Some were printed on white labels, and others on clear labels.
